death, depression = muerte, depresión
movie was dark = la película era deprimente/triste

Well, I'm not sure the way you asked the question, by way of those two examples, helped ease relations any...but I do like how you chose the words, "meaningful" discussion. What I, personally, don't like about these words is they are used as a dichotomy; as if we experience one polarity, we can not experience the other. Life is not so cut and dried. Nor is it so linear. This adoption MESS has a little of everything - all range of emotions covering many different experiences and circumstances. The problem is everyone discounting an experience that does not validate their own. The truth is something less than ideal, and until we acknowledge that YES it sometimes works and sometimes it DOESN'T, then we won't be able to figure out WHY and we won't be able to IMPROVE it. So yeah - I'd like to expunge this polarity of thought, this politicizing and entrenchment of positions and become a more pluralistic community and start really thinking about what's best for the children for a change.

Well, you could always say it was 'un drama' (yeah, a drama...).
Saying 'fue una película oscura' (it was a dark movie) would suggest something about the ilumination... unless you explain otherwise.
I would go for 'fue una película dramática' (it was a dramatic movie), if it was about suffering and lots of tears.
If it was more like... uhm... a scary movie, or similar 'fue una película de suspenso' (it was a suspense movie).
