Understand their fear- ask them what it is exactly that makes them afraid. Listen and respond, then assure them that there's nothing here that will hurt them etc, that your home is safe and you're there if they ever need anything. Try sitting in the dark with them for a couple minutes a few times and talk with them. Pick out a special night light to help in the mean time. Ignoring them, discounting their feelings, getting frustrated with them or telling them to get over won't help but make it worse becuase emotions will contibute to their fear too.

Like all questions it depends on the age of the child. What they may be watching or playing on TV. Possibly movies or books they read.

I still have nights, if I've read a particularly scary book that I'll leave the light on till I get very, very tired.

For my kids we had night lights. They can be purchased for about a dollar and have a Christmas tree light bulb in them. Some nights my son will fall asleep with his bedside lamp on, and later I will go in and turn it off.

I don't see where 'not being afraid of the dark' is a mature matter. Kinda like snakes...I'm turning 50 and still afraid of snakes. Relax and turn the light off later :)

I was lucky, my son didn't have a fear of the dark, but other parents I have talked to..who have this problem, keep a small night light on in their room or outside in the hall of their bedroom* Let them know they're safe* and you're just down the hall in your bed* GoodLuck-It will pass*~

night light....other than that, i just tell her she isn't. she really isn't,....she just thinks it's a reason not to go to bed...so i just tell her "no, you're not" when she says "i'm afraid of the dark" and after a couple times, she says "you're right, I'm not" LOL
