My husband and are going to buy me a new car later this summer. Currently I have a 1996 Cavalier 2 door, which the tranmission is going out in. We are looking for a smaller 4 door car that gets good gas mileage and is in the $8,000 range, used. This car would have to last 3-4 years at least and should be a good family car. Which make/model would you suggest and why?

The standard answer would be a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. Both are fuel efficient with a reputation for reliability, though they are a bit on the small side for a family car. They also retain their value well so for $8000 you'll probably be looking at something made in 1998-2000.

If you're not afraid of looking at domestic cars, a used Ford Taurus or Chevy Malibu can be a real bargain. You can easily get a well equipped 2001-2003ish model for around $8k. Their MPG is not as good as a compact car, but they're also considerably roomier. Some people are scared away from domestics because of their reputation, but modern domestic cars have improved quite a bit. Even an average car these days is fairly reliable.
