Battleships were ALWAYS named after states.Cruisers were named after cities.Destroyers and Destroyer escorts are named after famous sailors.USS Mason was a destroyer escort named for Newton Henry Mason,a pilot born in New York City and killed in the battle of Coral Sea in 1942.
