Why aren't you? I just don't believe in that, pure and simple.

I used to be a christian. I spent the first 13 years of my life in church. When I was around 12, I started listening to some of the things that I was being taught in church and I began thinking that they sounded unreasonable or that they just didn't make sense. It really troubled me that I was doubting, and I spoke to my pastor about my situation. He told me that if I would immerse myself in the word of god and prayed to him earnestly with an open heart, he would reveal himself to me and rid me of the doubts that satan had placed in my mind.

So I followed my pastor's advice. I prayed constantly, and read my bible everyday. The more I read my bible, the more confused I became -- especially the old testament. The more confused I was, the more frightened I became. I spent several nights lying awake in my bed, crying and begging god for help or at least comfort. I did this for a year, and after a year of no response from god, I could only come to two conclusions about why a loving deity would allow a 12 year old to lose her faith without some intervention -- either he did not exist, or he did not care.

I was still young, and I couldn't grasp the idea that there was no god yet. So I started studying the other religions. I dabbled in everything from judaism to satanism, and I didn't find "god" or even a sense of myself there either. Everything seemed equally ridiculous. I didn't believe that any of it could possibly be true.

I finally accepted the fact that I just didn't believe in any gods around the time that I turned 18. Ever since then, I've been much happier. I don't carry around the guilt that I used to have. I know that this life is the only one I'll ever be afforded, so I make the best of it.

Once again. Why do you not believe in the Easter bunny or Santa clause, Unicorns and fairies? That's the simple answer.
To son, I have not had a bad experience with religion. I had a bad experience learning how to ride a bike. I still got on and learned. You do not know what is in my heart or mind or any other atheist heart and mind.

It's not a choice - I simply cannot force myself to believe in God.

I believe in the human spirit and the power of the human race to make this world a better place.I think the concept of God crushes the human spirit and drowns our self-esteem.

Well, I didn't just wake up one morning and say "There are no gods," then go get coffee. It was a process taking years of study and reflection. I found science had better, more positive, and more believable answers. Plus, science keeps looking for answers instead of stopping at "God did it. End of story."

I was born, as we all are, with no knowledge or need for a belief in invisible/imaginary friends. Fortunately my parents had better things to do with their lives than waste it indoctrinating their kids into fantasy land.. I was born a free thinking person, and thank Zeus I have remained so.

Because I have yet to find a theistic religion that wasn't manufactured by humans, mostly patriarchal ones at that. I also disagree with the notion that "salvation" is necessary or that it is only found with some divine being outside of myself. I rely on myself.

Atheists are just as ignorant as Christians. Right after their bad experience with Christianity they close their mind and do not even check out the real religions that were there since the beggining of time.

I've yet to see enough solid proof to convince me otherwise.
