I feel like they're laughing at me because I can't lift much, but my boyfriend swears that men don't make fun of women at the gym unless they're lifting more than them.... I still feel weird working out around buff hot guys... is that dumb or what?

I don't think dudes are staring at me, to the first answerer. Go F yourself.

I push myself in the gym, just to let you know.

Not at all. Just ignore them, and look as confident as possible. That will make them back off a bit. Nothing is more mystical, attractive, and unsure to a guy then a women with confidence!

I can't believe I'm saying this but your b/f is right. Nobody with half a brain at a gym cares a hoot about how much you're lifting. And nobody cares about what you look like either. Most members remember well what they're first weeks were like and show empathy if anything. The fact that you go is major kudos. Let go of your ego, girl. Do what you go there to do and learn as much as you can. It can be like an extended family in some ways. A truly rewarding experience. There will always be the usual soap operas and dramas involved as there are anywhere but as long as you stay focused, you'll do just fine

It depends on what you mean by "not much." I hate to see the stupid women in the gym who only use machines and only lift 10 or 30 pounds for about 10 reps max. You won't see results if you don't push yourself at least a little bit occasionally.

On the other hand, it's normal for women to be much weaker than men and I would be much more disturbed by a women lifting more than me than a lot less. Typically women are only about half as strong as men in the upper body (and even half as strong is a good accomplishment) and about 3/4 as strong in the lower body (that too is a good accomplishment).

I think alot of people feel uncomfortable at the gym. The reality is that no one is probably paying attention to you and you are just projecting your insecurity onto the people around you. You should look into a woman's only gym like Curves...

I think its natural that you feel uncomfortable. Are there any other gays at the gym? If not, keeping lifting and do not worry about the guys.

Being a guy i can say that they are probably looking at you because they enjoy it and it's nice to see a girl rather than some sweaty guy, not because they're making fun of you.

It's not weird, although it's a bit self-centered. I'd imagine guys go to the gym to work out and are too concerned with their own exercise to spend their time staring at you.

Girl, you need to get over your insecurities! Being worried about men is keeping you from getting the best workout possible. I had to leave my inhibitions behind and workout with all of my heart! Forget about who is looking or what they are saying. You are going to have to do this if you want to achieve the body you want.

No, I get self-conscious working out in front of other people. So much that I choose to work out at home, so congrats to you for being so brave.
