you need to contact your vet. This souds like a serious problem when you are dealing with kidneys. I would not give your dog anything over the counter without first consulting your vet. And without knowing what meds your dog is on it would be hard for anyone to tell you a good answer

Some antibiotics can cause constipation, make sure he's drinking enough water to help with constipation and the kidney infection.

I would avoid the milk of magnesium - because your dog has a kidney infection and is constipated, he is at an increased risk of magnesium toxicity (your dog would become weak, have a racing heart beat, and become depressed if there was a magnesium toxicity, and stop drinking - not good for kidneys of constipation)

To get the dog's guts working I guess you tried pumpkin? (the stuff that's in the can for pie making - 1/2 cup once or twice a day). You could try putting some veggie oil on his regular food too. Hopefully the constipation isn't too bad, if you think there is a problem, as your vet for some sorbitol or Darabid.

Yes, antibiotics can cause constipation. Don't give him Milk of Magnesia, but a little oil on his food might help. Make sure he gets lots of water, and that he can get outside in a hurry! You can also get a Fleets enema for children and use that. We had to do that a few times to one of our dogs, and it works faster and more reliably than any oral things you might give him.

Yes, that is one side effect of taking antibiotics, constipation. This question of giving a dog milk of magnesia has passed through here before. Most people only guess and say no, do not give it, they are ignorant. You can safely give your dog milk of magnesia, I'm experienced and I know.

A few tablespoons of plain canned pumpkin should work. Try mixing it with his dog food. Unless he won't eat it at all.

1/2 a teaspoon of Metamucil will work. Also, 2 teaspoons of mineral oil twice a day.

But, Milk of Magnesia or Pepto-Bismol will work fine too.

Try giving him a couple tablespoons of canned pumpkin. That'll be less harsh & it's safe. Then call the vet in the morning & let them know what's going on.

Yes it can but rather avoid giving him any human medications, rather give him a pat of margarine, that'll get things going.
