When you adopt an animal you provide a home to a homeless, needy animal who may otherwise remain in a shelter, foster care, or worse. You are also supporting those who rescue animals and care for them after abandonment, being lost or being removed from a bad situation.

Most pets available to purchase are from backyard breeders or pet stores who buy from puppy mills. With this you may be supporting unethical treatment of animals, uneducated breeders or greedy animal owners.

Decide if you'd rather be part of the solution, or part of the problem.

Gee, you did not narrow it down much. Adopting is always good for the dog and for you especially if you adopt from a rescue. Buying a dog envelopes three different categories. First would be buying from a responsible breeder that has pet quality puppies available as a result of an altruistic breed program. The pluses here are that you are supporting a breeder that breeds to better the breed, you will get a fine quality dog from someone that will support you and the dog. Did you know that more and more responsible breeders guarantee the genetic health of their dogs for the life of the dog? Next would be a backyard breeder. They do it for all the wrong reasons, "I want my child to see puppies being born", or "wow, I can get $500 a piece for these pups". These breeders are not breeding to improve the breed and don't know what they are doing anyways. At the bottom and the real low life types are the puppy mill breeders. Their only goal is to make money. These are the dogs you see in the pet stores. These dogs are bred and kept in the most horrible conditions (I've seen it with my own eyes). The females are bred twice a year, kept in cages all their breeding life and discarded when they can no longer breed.

So how do you find a responsibe breeder to purchase from? Contact the AKC and find breed clubs in your area and contact them. I know that getting a dog from one of them is difficult if not impossible because of the demand, because these breeders only breed every few years and keep some of the pups for their program. Next responsible option would be to adopt. From a rescue, or shelter, or even someone that for some valid reason or another can't keep the dog. But, whatever you do, do not buy from a backyard breeder or from a pet store. I don't care what line of BS they give you to convince you that their dogs are the best.

Adopting - This is when you get your dog from a shelter or rescue facility. The dog can be any age and will usually already have a name.

Buying - This is when you get your dog from a breeder or pet shop. Generally when you buy a dog, they are still puppies.

If you are trying to decide whether to adopt or purchase consider this... When you adopt a dog you are ultimately rescuing a dog that might not have a chance otherwise. When you buy a dog you are starting fresh more then likely with a pet that was bred specifically for purchase.

I have dont both and have 2 great dogs that I love very much.

Adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue means you help to save a life of a stray or unwanted animal. Buying a dog from a breeder means there is one less home for a dog in a shelter that will no doubt get euthanised.

Plus getting a rescue dog just makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Shelters and Rescues quite often have puppies too if it's a puppy you're after.

Getting a rescue wins hands down in my opinion. Those dogs realise they've had a second chance and love you forever. I have 3 and they are the best!!

Adopting is saving a dog's life. Unless you want to become a breeder (and why would you) you can get the most beautiful, loving dog at a shelter or if you insist on a pure breed, try "breed rescue" of whatever dog you want. While there are reliable breeders out there, unfortunately there are too many "backyard breeders" that are only in it for the money. Please adopt!

To me, its a huge difference. Adopting a dog means you have sympathy for the poor homeless and unwanted dogs in the animal shelter. Buying a dog means you would like a special dog to be your companion and friend. If you ask me, I'd say adopting a dog is way better than buying one because adopted dogs a usually more friendly and faithful to their owners and saviors.

When you adopt a dog you usually get it from a shelter or a rescue center. Normally about 20-50 dollars. When you buy a dog, you probably pay a LOT more and they can usually come from a puppy mill. (meaning they make dogs mate to have puppies..)
Good Luck

When ppl buy dogs they generally do what they want with it, with an adopted dogs there are normally contracts to sign and certain responsibilities so that it does not end up at the SPCA again.

Adopting is when you get the dog from a shelter or foster home and buying a dog is when you buy one from a breeder.

When you adopt a dog, it can be any age from a puppy to elderly, and is from the pound, someone who wants to get rid of it, etc. When you buy a dog, it is from a breeder, as a puppy.
