This is so confusing. Basically I found a car that I like. The person is from NY but has the car parked in NJ (where he works). So tomorrow I am supposed to pay him and take the car away but I was confused on how that works.
Would i get in trouble if I drive the car off with no plates. How can i get the plates. I would need to first drive it to the MVC.
How does that work?
Do I have to first take the guy with me to motor vehicle to transfer title.
He told me after I pay him he would give me the title.
Again, I am just confused on how all of this will work...especailly me being able to drive it away.
any help is appreciated.

I too am buying a car.

First of all, i'd be careful buying the car before getting the title. you never know what people will do to screw you over. make sure he HAS the title, or else it will be very difficult to even register the car.

I believe if you put on existing plates from another vehicle of yours, or even the plates on the car now that he has you can drive it away. you'll need to register it within the first 3 days of owning the car i THINK. my dad's been helping me with my purchase & im not 100% positive on the details.

He needs to sign the title over to you before you take it. If he does not sign the title over to you , you will not be able to register the car.

Good luck!

To remove all doubt, call your local DMV. They should be able to tell you how to handle the transaction and the car.
