Your throat should never hurt when you sing. It is caused by not breathing properly and straining your vocal chords. Make sure you neck and tongue are relaxed every time you sing, the entire time you are singing! Take a little time off for your vocal chords to heal, and drink plenty of water!

Here's a first voice mini-lesson for you! This is what I teach my students during the first few weeks!

1. Breathing. Make sure you are taking nice deep breaths. To check this, squat or plie during warm-ups. When you breathe in your low ab muscles should drop (due to lowering the center of gravity). Your belly and back will expand! Every breath should feel like that when you sing!

2. Singing posture. Make sure you are standing with your feet shoulder width apart, back/neck/head are aligned, and your chin is not sticking out. When men (and some women) sing high, they unknowingly stick their neck out to "reach" for the high notes. Make sure your head stays straight and your chin is parallel to the ground.

3. Do warm-ups that stretch your cords gradually. Start in your low range and work your way up. Make sure you are changing to your head voice when getting in the upper part of your range. You can stretch your vocal cords by pushing them by half-step higher every day you practice. Whatever you do, listen to your body, and if your throat feels strained, stop!

4. Drop your jaw! Do not sing horizontally (like you're smiling). It adds nasality to your tone. To check yourself put both hands to your face, one finger on the corners of your mouth in a resting position. When you sing (warm-ups or repertoire) do not let the corners of your mouth widen past your fingers!

Yes. It indicates that either you're singing improperly, or you might have a cold or allergies affecting your ability to sing without hurting yourself. Drink some warm tea with honey and lemon to sooth your throat and see if that helps. I also advise looking into voice lessons so that you can learn how to sing properly without aggravating your throat or vocal chords.

It just means that your throat is a little strained from being used. Take a little time to be quiet, maybe drink some tea or someting else soothing, and start singing again later!

If your throat is hurting then something is wrong with your mechanics or you are ill. Good singing feels free and easy. You can do damage to your vocal cords over time. Be careful.

Quit smoking!
If you dont smoke, quit singing.

No seriously though, unless you are a smoker or have strained vocal chords, you are probably not breathing correctly and are singing from your throat.
Join a civic chorus or find the local chapter of SPEBSQSA (barbershop singing). You will learn how to sing properly and gain a wide range of musical influance.

It's because you're not using support from your diaphragm. My chorus teacher always makes us do breathing excercises. You should always breath out like a balloon. The singing voice shouldn't come from the throat. It should come from the stomach and the nose cavity.

Oh, yes .... it is.
Try to quit for the day....take off 2 days, hardly speak at all, drink warm tea, have steak for dinner, get lots of sleep .....and try again the 3rd day.... but take it easy....if it does not work nicely, do the whole routine over until you are back to normal...

singing naturally arises out of joy, so be sure not to overwork it...
.....stay joyous always ...

if it hurts on one side only then your probably straining your voice WAY to much. if it just hurts, it means that your puting a reasonable about of strain on your voice and its ok to sing, but not too much

Most likely because you were singing loudly. I doubt bad technique is the cause.
