How to connect a hook up wire to a battery?

How do you connect a hook up wire to a battery? I'm trying to make an electric motor out of a "D" cell battery, and unfortunately, the store I went to didn't have a battery holder to make the electric motor start, so I got hook up wires instead. I just don't know how to use them. Can anyone help by today? Thanks!

I am not sure what "hook up" wires are, but if there is insulation, take out a 1/4 inch insulation on each side and tape the wires to the battery terminals. Use electricians tape or any other tape you can find in the house. As long as the battery terminals are attached to the wire, you will be OK.
