My daughter started using a program called "Lime Wire. She claims it is legal. I am worried. I remember Kazzaa and Napster among others being sued and shut down. I also got a few viruses from those two. Does anyone know about Lime Wire? Is it legal and safe?

Limewire is legal and perfectly fine. Some of the content isn't. Unfortunately, downloading music off of it isn't. Also, porn is also avaiable off of the limewire network.

Don't worry, it's legal and safe as far as I know. I do know that the new version of Lime Wire does not contain any viruses or spyware or anything like that. It's legal, but a lot of people use it for illegal things like downloading music illegally. Also, it CAN be dangerous. The program itself is not dangerous or illegal, but anyone can upload a file (I mean ANYONE who has the program) so it can get dangerous if you don't know what your doing. Some people might upload files claiming there something there not. For an example they might say it's Photoshop CS2 (A safe editing program) when it might actually be a virus. I hope I helped!

I would not be too concerned about the legal issue. Court cases are always pending & the end user is never prosecuted.
Lime Wire is just a file sharing site where people get music & software from other people. There are hundreds if not thousands such sites.

So far as being "safe" .... no more & no less than many many other mainstream sites on the web.
Use a current anti virus & spyware program & you'll be fine.

Using Limewire or other P2P programs to download (steal) music, software and movies etc. without paying for it, is one of the leading causes of virus and spyware infections. Many downloads using P2P file-sharing programs are loaded with malware

LIMEWIRE IS NOT A WEBSITE.

She will be downloading "stuff" from unknown stranger's computers while they will be uploading from her computer at the same time. One does not download from any website.

It is amazing that people who would never accept and eat a sandwich from a stranger, don't think twice about downloading a file to their PC from a perfect stranger, who lives half-way around the World!

If you don't know the difference between a .wmp (good) file from a .wmf (potentially very bad) file or a .zip from a .pif, then stay away from Limewire, Kazaa, and all P2P programs. The same is true if you don't know the difference between a song that is 25kb in size from one that is 3 mb in size. The smaller one is probably a Trojan, just waiting for you to infect your computer with.

P2P file-sharing is no place for computer novices. Even experienced expert users get infected using P2P at times.

If she must use P2P, always scan every file she downloads with her anti-virus and her anti-spyware before she opens it.
..................

And don't forget the legality issues.

Using Limewire or any other P2P file sharing program such as Kaaza or Bearshare, (free or paid) to download any copyrighted music, movies, software etc. in illegal in the USA.

It is fairly rare, but people do get sued and fined for using these P2P programs. Such as this 12 year old girl here:

Good luck.

These sites are illegal if headquartered in US. Nothing can be done about sites based elsewhere in the world. The US doesn't have any jurisdiction. Getting arrested would have the same odds as winning a national lottery!
