*READ THIS* Cops say the only thing that keeps drug dealers in business are their profits. They say if drugs were controled by the government and distributed by the government for free or a fraction of what the dealers charge, the dealers would go out of business soon. Addicts are usually poor and they would take free drugs over paying $20 or so.

They say the war on drugs cost $69 BILLION every year and we are making no progress. If the war on drugs ended, we would have $69 billion every year that can go towards social problems like education and health care. Public schools recieve low funding because billions are being spent on the failed war on drugs.

Kids who stuggle in school look at drug dealing as an option if school doesn't work out. (But it's not the kids fault that the schools get low funding). If the government controled drugs and put the dealers out of business, the kids who struggle will not think of drug dealing as an option. Comments?

Substance abuse has ever been a problem for mankind. A certain percentage of society finds it difficult to do things in moderation. Society reacts by making such substances illegal which only creates a criminal subculture that is often more of a problem than the substance itself - Columbian gangs, for example, or rival drug gangs engaging in shootouts on U.S. streets.

When efforts to legalize drugs become known to the drug cartels they immediately spread megabucks around to prevent it from happening. They buy every lawmaker for miles around, because their lucrative industry would disappear overnight if legalization was successful.

When the U.S. threw prohibition out and legalized alcohol again, the violent rum-runners disappeared and government tax revenues skyrocketed. Why can't the same thing be done in regards to drugs?

The newest problem to confront the U.S. regarding substance abuse concerns obesity. Let's see how much trouble the government has if they try to make food illegal!

Laws don't really stop crime - they just increase earning opportunities for lawyers...........................

Anyone who stops and thinks about it realizes that the war on drugs is a catastrophic failure and colossal waste.

I mean, if they legalized drugs, we could harness Afghanistans huge poppy industry, and make morphine to be sold, making money for their country and getting the money out of the hands of local warlords (many of which arent exactly pro-American). All that at a fraction of the cost of the "eradiction" budget!

Thats only one of the hundreds of things that could be solved with the legalization of drugs. How do all the rebels and terrorists across South America pay for their weapons and such? Drug money. Legalize cocaine and I'll bet you more than half of Central and South America's rebel armies disband within one year. The Hell's Angels? All the drug-dealing street gangs? Kiss 'em all goodbye with the legalization of drugs.

You should look into Mike Gravel's campaign for the Presidency. He understands all this and would work to legalize marijuana first and then other drugs later, more progessively.

Not sure if you realize this but there are always going to be drug dealers.... Legalize the drug and someone is still going to sell it..

So 69 billion dollars eh? Well look at this... We legalize heroin and that money will just start going towards rehabs, hospital bills and funerals.

Just look at the cost of regulating Oxycontin and oxycodone yearly.

I don't have a problem with legalizing drugs; however, the government should NOT be providing drugs to feed the addiction of addicts. Where is my free beer and cigarettes? Drugs like marijuana should be legalized, regulated, and get the hell taxed out of just like tobacco and alcohol. We can then use this additional tax revenue along with what we save by not fighting the 'war on drugs' for schools and other projects.

drugs could be legalized. right this is why: a million) No black marketplace. Undercuts investment for terrorism and multiple different unlawful activities. 2) administration of what is going into drugs. Fewer deaths. 3) If drugs are criminal, our prisons would not be overcrowded. 4) scientific care and rehab could be funded from the taxes raised via drug revenues.

legalize weed and most people wont turn to these other drugs when they "cant find weed". A human has the right to do whatever they wish to with their own body, long as it harms noone else, cant say alcohol fits the "long as it harms noone else" bill

Decriminalize weed at the very least.
If you want to fry your brains, have at it.
