I know a lot of dog foods are overpriced but are really no better. We haven't had any luck with foods yet for our dog's skin allergies. I've heard about Canidae and wondered if anyone has tried it. Is it worth the money?

Read the ingredients on the food you buy. Go with a high quality dog food. A grain should not be in the first couple ingredients ingredient (corn and such are mainly fillers, dogs don't digest it well). Avoid foods that have a lot of "by products" listed.

Dog Chow ingredients:
Ground yellow corn, poultry by-product meal, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), corn gluten meal, brewers rice, soybean meal, animal digest, calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, salt, potassium chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, zinc proteinate, ferrous sulfate, added color (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2, Yellow 6), manganese sulfate, manganese proteinate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, copper proteinate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, Vitamin B-12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate, Vitamin D-3 supplement, riboflavin supplement, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid, biotin, sodium selenite.

Canidae ingredients:
Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Herring Meal, Flax Seed, Sun Cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil, Chicken, Lecithin, Monocalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Linoleic Acid, Rosemary Extract, Sage Extract, Dried Enterococcus Faecium, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Extract, Dried Bacillus Subtilis Fermentation Extract, Inulin (from Chicory root), Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Fermentation Solubles, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Mixed Tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Cobalt Amino Acid Chelate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (source of B2), Beta Carotene, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid, D-Biotin, Sodium Selenite, Papaya, Vitamin B12 Supplement.

Canidae is obviously the better choice of these foods. There's not even a competition here! Canidae blows Dog Chow out of the water.

When looking for dog foods, I recommend you check this website to find GOOD dog foods, not full of fillers and byproducts, they rate dog foods based on the ingredients, 6 being the best. I would recommend feeding only 4+ star foods. Any food 3 stars or less, I would avoid.

(Canidae has a 5 star rating, meaning it is nutritionally high-quality dog food.)

When switching foods, do it slowly. I do this over about a two week timespan:
25% food A, 75% food B
50% food A, 50% food B
75% food A, 25% food B
100% food A

OMG yes, there is absolutely no comparison at all.. It's like Canidae is steak and Dog chow is... old shoe leather..

They eat far less Canidae than they do the cheap crap foods like dog chow. they get their nutrition easier, and they eat less... The ingredients is where you compare the two.. There is just no comparison to dogchow at all..
Very much worth the money.. We feed our 9 dogs the Canidae.. From puppies right up to a spayed 8 year old and they all love it, do great on it, the benefits are far too many to even list.. It is well worth your money.. There are other great foods out there too.. Some breeds do better with some foods, others on another food, but they all require a good quality dog food.. No matter the breed..

People who feed garbage food do so because they are kidding themselves into thinking that dogfood is dogfood.. They aren't willing to take the time to do the research and find out what the ingredients mean and what goes into the foods.. It's easy to buy the cheap crap from the grocery store...

If you love your dog, you will feed it good food.. If you love your VET and love giving him your money, then you'll feed cheap crap from the grocery store.

HI my dogs are eating Canidae. They love it and it's really not that expensive either. I was surprised to learn it cost the same as what I was feeding my boys here. It is a great food with no by products or corn or wheat or soy.
It has not been involved in any of the recalls.
I pay 38 dollars for a 40 pound bad.
I'd suggest you purchase a small bag and see if your dog likes it as much as mine do.

a lot of dog food out there is crap-- if you knew what was really in them you would never feed it to your dog

canidae is all human-grade food-- no chicken beaks/feet or anything else gross like that

and since dogs eat less of it, they poop less :)
