Not only librarians, but midwives as well. Couldn't have heretical witches giving aid and comfort to women in childbirth when everyone knew all women must suffer through the agonies of childbirth as God's revenge for Eve's original sin. The patriarchal European medical profession arose from the vacuum created after the Church eliminated the only source of medical care in most of Europe. Besides childbirth, midwives set broken bones and sutured serious wounds. Imagine the human suffering, after the Church declared that midwives were witches and burned most of them, because they supposedly thwarted God's will by giving comfort to women in childbirth. A perfect example of how blind adherence to superstitious doctrine fails to address the real needs of human civilization.

Access to independent knowledge is a threat to religion and must be destroyed. Look at attempts now in America to stifle evolutionary facts for example (in schools, Grand Canyon).
