Nightmares (and dreams too!) are often just your mind making sense of things that have gone on in your world. Has life been really shakey? Are these nightmares about things that have happened in your life? Is it repeating? Sometimes, you need to work through things that happened in the day, before you will be getting a better sleep. As well, you can do quiet things before bed -- have tea, or hot chocolate. Read, relax, do some yoga. That tends to work. If its really bothersome, talk to your family doctor.

ok, this will sound weird, but it works for me. Before bed, do some self guided imagery. Take your time, and imagine it all as clearly as you can.......
close your eyes sit comfortably, imagine you are standing in front of a warehouse. You go in and it is filthy inside, lots of trash and dirt, clean it up. Get all the garbage gathered into a box, put the box on a ship and watch it sail away, go back in and scrub that warehouse down, get it clean. When you leave the warehouse, lock the door.
This little self guided exercise clears the unwanted baggage you are carrying around in your subconscious on an emotional level. Bet if you do this, there will be no nightmares.

I think you need to work out WHY you keep having disturbing dreams.
Are they connected to something you're anxious about in everyday, waking life?
Keep a dream diary: every morning, scribble down as many details and key points about the dreams you've just had. After a week or so, you might find some common 'themes' emerging, and you can then analyse the dreams a bit more effectively and find out why you're having them.
It might just be your unconscious working out problems; maybe you have a very vivid imagination! Perhaps you would enjoy a creative writing class?

Ready a good, happy book before going to bed. Don't focus on depressing or sad stuff. You should also try praying and maybe watching happy movies of tv shows.
