You need a proper comparison.
How do you compare to the perfect man, the Lord Jesus Christ?
If this leads to despair, there is hope:
"It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."
Ephesians 4:11-13

When you are able to control your destiny...
If you understand your potential, and are not relying on an outside force to blame for your shortcomings, then you "know yourself."
The idea that there is some immutable "whole self" to know in total before your life is finished is voodoo at best and Christianity at worst...WHO YOU ARE CAN CHANGE FROM DAY TO DAY...Part of knowing yourself is understanding that the only thing standing in the way of you BECOMING WHAT YOU WANT TO BE, is the identity that says "that's just not me, I can't do that," and that is one of the worst and most erroneous assumptions that a person can make...
When you understand that you are what you do, and what you will allow yourself to be, then you know yourself to be the product of your expectations and your will...

When one is constantly in contact with God and they are unattached to materialism and constantly serving God. They are in their constitutional position (real self.) doesn't mean they wont have feelings or emotions or sadness due to feeling compassion for the condition of the fallen souls. But they will be satisfied with what God has given them and all their service. That is a self realized soul For info go to harekrishnatemple.come Read Bhagavad Gita as it is By Bhaktivedanta- says the quickest way to self realization is to chant the maha mantra- the great mantra for deliverance from all suffering and illusion. I love it.

When your basis (of thought) changes, the effects are too strong not to be noticed. Many fears and misunderstandings are things of the past, and things become clear. Yourself becomes revealed.

We all change a bit as we grow and have more experiences so I think we have to adapt to that. But to know one's self is to know where you stand on things, what your values are, and no one or no thing will sway you to change for someone else. There is much more self confidence and less insecurity.

When you can think of the person you are, your positives/negatives, your way of thinking and how you treat others etc. and be fully content with who you are. Then again, we are always discovering new aspects of who we are, maybe no one can ever truly know who they are.

When you realize that everything the bible says about the human condition is absolutely true, and you've seen it proven in your own life.
i.e., "the heart is desperately wicked, who can know it?"
Oh...and most importantly....you know who you are....in Christ.
