if you are trying to lose weight - do light weight training first (light weights and high reps - do 2-3 sets) and then cardio
if you are trying to gain - cardio first and then weights (heavy weights and low reps - also do 2-3sets)

Both are acceptable. Frequently when making personalized programs I use the cardio for warm-up then do weight training for main body of work out. I usually do stretching for cool down.
Its easy, well rounded, shorter and works well for most people like that. You don't need to do it that way. Just make sure you warm up and cool down properly.
Note: Cardio burns LITTLE energy/fat compare to weight training.

Actually it really depends on your goal. If your goal is weight loss, then either one first is fine. However, if your goal is to increase strength and get stronger, then research shows that doing cardio first counteracts that. You deplete your energy stores and it would affect the weight training portion of the session when you really need that extra edge. So it would actually be advantageous to do weights first before cardio if your goal was to get stronger. In addition, limit the cardio if your goal is to get stronger. (research has shown that as well)
Like I said, it really depends on your goal.

Either way is fine. Also, the second poster is right. Weight training is more effective than cardio because it increases your lean mass which will burn extra calories 24 hours per day.
Here is a sample workout:
