I think usually a religious person is focused on works and activity that has to do with directives given by their God, where a "spiritual person" is focused on seeking counsel and closeness with a higher being. They are not mutually exclusive however as most religious people are spiritual as well.

I belive that spiritual is more like, do you walk your talk outside of church, or are you just a big talker? To some, church is a thing to have in a schuduled week. You know, like a check list. Whereas, to be spiritual, is to walk around with your God in every part of your day, all week long. Never making time for them, but to always have them there with you.
* I say "them", because I believe in a Mother/Father/God. Not just one being who we believe is a man. And I accept all forms of religion, and that there is no "one" right way to believe and pray.

Religious people generally tend to just go to church&sit in the pew,but outside of the church they have no real relationship with God.They're generally the ones that hold to overly strict religious rules
Spiritual, generally means that you actually have a relationship with God via faith, prayer&obedience.
I generally prefer spiritual.

"You may remember the story of how the devil and a friend of his were walking down the street, when they saw ahead of them a man stoop down and pick up something from the ground, look at it, and put it away in his pocket. The friend said to the devil, 'What did that man pick up?' 'He picked up a piece of the truth,' said the devil. 'That is a very bad business for you, then,' said his friend. 'Oh, not at all,' the devil replied, 'I am going to help him organize it.' I maintain that truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect. That is my point of view, and I adhere to that absolutely and unconditionally. Truth, being limitless, unconditioned, unapproachable by any path whatsoever, cannot be organized; nor should any organization be formed to lead or coerce people along a particular path."
