My son is taking me racing at a rental area race track. He has been racing for two years and I have never been in a go kart.

How can i keep from getting lapped? Help me.
Where do i brake and where do I put the petal down?
When do I keep low?
What is the best way to pass someone?

I just want to have fun with my 20 year old son...but I do not want to be beat really badly.
Thanks

OK, Wayne has been racing his whole life but doesn't know how to spell kart. Says wear sunglasses? Uh, no, you don't race a kart with anything less than a full face helmet.

Anyway, first off: NEVER hit the brakes real hard. That will cause you to spin. Brake lightly and let off the throttle just before the turn, get back on it as soon as you can. Keep in mind that karts actually handle better if you're on the throttle than if you're off. Try to get back on it by 1/2 way thru the turn, if you stay on it the power will pull you through the rest of the turn and carry the speed onto the straight. Try to brake only in a straight line, not in the turns. Forget the bump drafting, if you've never driven before you'll not be able to pull that off successfully. And don't go too tight on the turns. Try to turn in kinda wide and let the kart drift to the inside. Good luck! You're gonna have a blast no matter how bad he beats you LOL

I have been racing go-carts all my life and am a pro-series champ.....I have been out of the leage for a couple of years now and am a front-Tire changer in the Nascar Busch serise for a local KY team. Here's the main Thing go out there and have fun, spend some time with your son. Ok in go-kart racing there is one big thing that will take you out of the race completely, If you are behind someone and you dont have eye protection on and gravel and road debris gets in your eyes your done (wear sunglasses or safety glasses if you have to but protect your eyes.) Ok cornoring is the best place to start, Go-low in the cornors (hug the turn) Back-off the throttle just as you go-in and 1/2 way through get-back into the throttle and let the kart drift to the outside of the staight away this will keep your momentum up and keep you going a lil bit faster. Also when you get close to you opponent give the a light tap on the rear of the kart and cause the to have to back out of the throttle, then dart to the out side and pass. (that is bump drafting if not done correctly it wont do anything but possibly cause you both to spin out) tap lightly not a hard bump. So just go out there and have some fun and spend so time with you kid.

My best advise is to go and just have fun and don't worry about being lapped by your son or by anyone else. Don't forget, your son has a two-year head-start and it's to be expected he will be much better than you, experiencig a kart for the first time.
Perhaps you'll get the karting `bug' become a regular at the track and eventually start beating your son. For now, just have fun and laugh a lot.

here is the best advice to give you, follow him for a few laps,
as close as you can with out running into him, after a few laps once you learn the track then you can try and pass him, but i have a feeling hes going to have fun with you and not treat you like someone from his league

the only remote chance you have to avoid being lapped is to talk to the person ( your husband ) who builds his engine, ask him to detune his ... otherwise somebody like you who has never been in a kart will never even come close to his rear... somebody wrote that he`d been racing all his life and actually tried to give you driving suggestions on how to do it... made me laugh...why dont you just go out with your son and enjoy the day...

LMAO! Shelve your ego and have fun, Dale senior.! Ask him for advice, not us. He already knows you're a kart neophyte and asked you to join because he wants a better relationship with you and here's your chance for the good times. It's not the opportunity to dunk dad he's really interested in, it's, "Hey. dude, can we share a hobby?" Gentlemen start your engines and may the best man listen up to his son.

Most important tip is don't chose a small character (e.g. Baby Mario) because you get knocked about too easily, heavy/medium characters like Wario/Mario are better. Also, utilize drifting and shortcuts to your advantage; see how the expert staff ghosts do it then apply it to your gameplay. This what I do to ensure I always come 1st and get maximum points (I rarely come below 4th using this method!).
