What is actually going on in the body/skin that would cause relief? Do you know of any actual scientific research to show that it works?

no it doesn't. It can make one feel good for a while but it's always short lived. The last thing you want to use on painful muscles is cold or ice water. The muscles are already tight to cause the pains and anything cold can cause them into more pain which you wouldn't feel until the feeling returns to the area or it would keep the muscles tight longer if nothing else. Heat is best on tight muscles and releasing the muscles is best, it gets rid of all the tightness in the muscles.
