sit ups dont burn fat - they only build muscle so would make that area look bigger.
cardio is the only fat burning exercise - 4-6 times a week for 30-50min combined with light weight training so you wouldnt lose muscle

Situps can help love handles, and so can other tricks!

It all starts with what you eat. Love handles can be caused by saturated fat, found in shortening, butter, cookies, fast food, pastries, and other foods along that line. So, avoid these foods.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Fruits like grapefruit, strawberries (or other berries), pears, apples, etc. are all good for you and to remove love handles. Dark, leafy veggies like spinach are also good. Drinking lots of water helps slim your tummy and get rid of love handles.

Do the situps you are thinking about, and try a twist on it. Cross your body when you come up to one side to focus on that lovehandle, then do situps twisting to the other side for a few times. Soon, the fat on your belly and its sides will literally melt away.

What diva girl says - sensible diet and exercise.
Sit ups aren't going to help much if you feast on unhealthy food most of the time and do little or no other forms of exercise.

regular sit up do not do a thing... the best thing to do is get a wrap that keeps in the sweat as you exercise .. it goes around your waist put it right one your love handles... you can get them for like 7 - 10 bucks anywhere... then do your workout it works like magic....
