To cross the border by bus, you will need photo I.D. (drivers license, non-drivers state I.D.) and proof of citizenship (birth certificate).

If you are visiting someone in Canada for an extended period, the question arises as to whether you intend to return to the U.S. If you are interviewd by Canada Immigration in this regard, having the following information with you will be a benefit.

You need to have proof of employment, including a note from employer as to when you are expected back to work; rental receipts showing current payments, and payment through the time you intend to return OR mortgage information to show you own your home; any other evidence of need to return to the U.S. such as information about minor children that live with you, a note from who is caring for them that they expect you back one such and such date; registration and insurance for vehicles you own that are staying in the U.S. etc.

Other things that will be looked for is the amount of cash you have on you, whether U.S., Canadian, or both, AND the amount of money immediately available via ATM debit card (receipt with current date showing balance); proof of medical insurance that will cover you while in Canada if needed -- this cannot include medicaid or medicare, as it won't cover you while in Canada; and information about the person you are visiting, such as their address, how long they have lived there, who they live with, where they work, how long they have worked there.

Having excess baggage will also concern customs officials as to whether your stated purpose is genuine. Also, if you have already been denied entry at any time, this will cause you to be interogated more closely.

EDIT: Sorry, I misread the question, and answered it going into Canada rather than into the U.S.; but the basics of what I said hold true both directions, the primary exception being you won't be asked about health ins going into the U.S. My Canadian husband, and I, have both experienced this, he into the U.S. and I into Canada.

you're actually not being flagged and neither is your female chum. you do not desire a criminal professional. yet you're showing suspicious habit and the immigration officers are purely doing what they could do based on the way you're performing. in case you attempt to come back to the U. S. returned, deliver purely a life like quantity of bags; do not %. such as you would be right here for 8 months. once you're purely coming for a one-week pass to you do not desire 4 suitcases. Bringing too lots bags is an extremely suspicious sign. on your female chum, verify she has a around-holiday cost ticket next time. in case you won't have the ability to instruct you're going living house, they are easily appropriate in not letting you are available in. and confirm you have the right decrease back-up documentation: your condominium hire that exhibits you have a place to stay on your living house u . s . for the subsequent besides the undeniable fact that-many months, paycheck stubs that instruct you have a activity to pass decrease back to, etc.

They stopped us and checked passports and/or ID documents.

I was one of the lucky ones they selected for a "random" search, they made me open my suitcase and looked inside.

They asked the same questions they do at the airports. What's your purpose to go to the states?.. How long are you going to stay? where? and if i was aware of all the contents of my suitcase?

They did that to 4 other ppl too

I have a canadian passport.
