Yes, they were considered unclean, and actually put outside the city. That is why the woman of the issue of blood had such great faith. She could have been stoned to death for even touching the hem of Jesus' garment. But I believe that she was at the point where she didn't care, healing or death and she chose life and Jesus.

From what I remember, some of the stricter orders of Judiasm forbid sex between husband and wife during the menstrual cycle--to this day. I also remember hearing something about needing to put a sheet up between them at this time of the month.

I know when we operated flights with orthodox Jews the cabin staff were all made to sign a form to say we were not menstruating at the time as we were not allowed to serve them if we were.
