Staying at a condo on the beach.

DEFINITELY get a car. You will be in a fairly remote area of the island. It is very beautiful, and the beach in front of your condo will certainly be very nice. Be careful venturing out in the Waianae area, it is very local, and can be very rough for tourists. For the most part, people are very nice, but you really need to be on your guard and keep a low profile as much as possible on that side of the island, more than anywhere else on Oahu. As far as things to do, there is a waterpark on the way out to Makaha, as well as some nice golfing in that area. The beaches are great, but most of the "attractions" are closer to town. Can you be more specific about the types of activities you are interested in? I am assuming if you are in Makaha, you are just interested in laying on the beach, if so, you picked a nice place. Aloha, Steve.

Makaha is very beautiful and nice. A lot of the local Hawaiians live there as well. If you see any stones piled up, or flowers decorated at an altar like place, or fruits laid out that don't seem to be for sales, it is a sacred place for the Hawaiians. Please don't think they are pagans and topple the stones or take the offerings away.
Otherwise know what you want to do. Do you just want to hang around and rest and enjoy the beach and be out of the tourist section? Then you are in the right place. However, do you want to go shopping, and see what all the other tourists do? Then you will need a rental car. The bus will take you to the inner area of Waikiki for 2 dollars one way, which comes out cheaper if you just want to go to Waikiki and Alamoana to shop or dine, however if you are going out at night, I suggest you get a car. But if you like nature, and have a restful time, you have chosen a good place!

yeah, don't upset the locals. they can rough you up! also you will be on the west (dry) side. the ocean is gorgeous but the land surroundings not so great. get over to the east (green) side for the beautiful mountains & cliffs. really do need a car for that. Makaha Valley is pretty, good hiking if you want to go on long hikes. good side to scuba. the snorekeling there not so good- too deep-be careful entering/exiting water, somtimes the current can suck you out. ask a life guard to be safe. Best sunsets. any kind of happening night life will not be had on that side. head to Waiks for that.

Yes make sure you have a car. Everything you want to see is on the other side of the island. Don't get me wrong, you are staying at a nice are, and I have know people who have stayed there and were very happy. However they all say the same thing: "we were too far from everything else". If you want to get away and just relax, you will be happy.
