Scripture says that upon death, thoughts perish.....

The body and the spirit were entertwined at birth..... They, like a marriage, became one person..... without one or the other, there is no living soul...... And so it is required of a mother and father to form that one living soul......

when the soul ceases to be.... the breath within it, returns to God.... the soul returns to the soil from which it was formed..... Like a woman whose eggs were unfertile are cast out of the body goes to the ground.....

The body will think no more forever.... like an unfertilized egg that was cast out....

The spirit was full of life when it be-came.... and so will return with its thoughts..... because it is the living that came to be inside that egg......... it was quickened with life when it was formed within the man who brought it forth........

The spirit is the image of God.... it is eternal...... and is the reason it returns to Him....... yet... Not all spirits are able to get past sheol..... so, there are some who walk among us as disembodied........ Others have found their way into the kingdom....

If they should ever return to you and say they have experienced hell.... let it be known to you, that they have not passed sheol........

When we are outside of our bodies we are still aware of our body's existence. Same with after we are dead. How else could we experience heaven, hell, judgment, the bardo, reincarnation, paradise? One of the constant themes of world religion is that we can experience existence outside of our body.

although the bible tells us little about what it will be like in heaven, it seems that we will most likely have a physical body. 1 corinthians 15:52 says that "the dead will be raised incorruptible" and that those who are alive at the time of Christ's return for his saints "shall be changed." the connection you made with the believer's eternal future and the resurrection of Jesus Christ is a very good one because he is "the firstfruits" of those who have died

I've read that when we are in a deep sleep, our motor control is disengaged. We are unaware of our physical surroundings. Yet, we dream....well some of us dream, I guess that is a form non-corporeal self awareness...

We would only do so if consciousness could survive without our physical body and obviously people have different opinions on that.

Because we are made up of a body, spirit, and soul. Our body is just a vehicle for our spirit and soul.
