For someone who doesn't know, in Russia, the government has a real tragedy with the illegal software, people buy many PCs but very little think about the quality of the software/

What is the situation in the US i wonder?

Not much different, I do not think piracy is good, but sometime the software companies doesnt help by forcing users to take a backdoor route.

We have a site licence for Microsoft products, so we never had to look elsewhere, the rest we either write ourself or by them off the internet by the lowest possible cost.

I use a lot of open source software - I use Gimp for image editing, for example, and Picasa2. I've been using OpenOffice for word processing and spreadsheets, and Oracle 9i and MySql for my home database needs. VLC is my media player of choice, and I'm experimenting with Audacity for audio work.

I'm from Russia, I have only licensed software ;)
If you can't buy software - you don't need it.
