People who have never had a pitbull, have no right to answer this question. Both dogs can be wonderful family pets. I myself have a pitbull that my husband and I rescued from a shelter when he was just a puppy. He is the sweetest dog and loves kids!
Pits get a bad reputation because there are idiots that raise them to be mean, and then there are the even bigger idiots that belive stereotypes as facts, even if they have no knowledge of the dogs themselves. Several people posted...."pitbulls are mean and unpredictable". All dogs have different personalities. Do these people know from experience?
I was bitten last month by my best friends black lab who I've known for years......now I'd say that was unpredictable!
As for living in an apartment, I'd go with a smaller dog such as a Pug or Boston Terrier.
With any breed, be prepared to take the time to raise your dog properly with love and training!

The best dog to have in an apartment would be a bulldog because the dog will not go as crazy as a pitbull. And since a pitbull could cause a problem because some will get over protective and might become a problem, and since you also have to think about how big your kids are and how would deal with a big or little dog.

I prefer the AB but they do have allergy issues being mostly white. IMHO it is not a question of the dog being good with kids but the kids being good with dogs. Adults must supervise the two and neither breed would be my choice if you have kids in and out to play. If their kid screamed they might bite the neighbor's kid. Both need exercise, the pit needing more so you must find a dog park or jog with the dog. All dogs are trainable, breeds differ in how quick they learn and what they are able to do. Gsds have been trained to hunt as Labs do and my Rott was run with a GSP pup so learned to hunt birds. Both bully breeds tend to be stubborn. As something like 75-80% of dog bites are by unneutered males please neuter your dog by 10 mos. If you have lots of guests or kids running in and out I would get a less guard/aggressive type breed. My friend has 2 ABs and few people besides her hubby, kid, her and I can go into the house with no one there. If YOU are going to teach your kids to be good with dogs, and supervise them a Lab or Standard Poodle plus many other breeds would be my choice for kids. I would find a reputable breeder, not always the top show winner, and get a pup or young adult with a stable temperament.

I would say an American Bulldog because even though they're thought to be mean, I think they are pretty docile. Now I think Pitbulls are truly mean and aggresive, so I don't think that would be a good family dog.

Pittbulls are unpredictable. An American Bulldog will get pretty big.My aunt has minurature english bulldogs and they are huge! if you got them as a puppy you could probably train the pitbull to be nice to the kids. But be carefull they are still unpredictable.
Good Luck=)
