Because it is easier to tell people what to do instead of following your own public beliefs.

I have known good Christians over the years, many who have had abortions. Some were pressured by parents, spouse/boyfriend, etc. Some were afraid for their parents or boyfriends to know they became pregnant, some knew that they were not ready for parenthood, or would not be a good parent--some were drug addicts or alcoholics.

I'm not an abortion fan, but in the cases of rape, incest, where birth will threaten the mother's life, where it is known that the baby will be born severely handicapped/deformed, etc. some people feel that they are doing the right thing.

Many of the people who had abortions carry the guilt with them always, but some did not have a choice in the matter.

Let's get back to Christianity: Catholicism is a Christian denomination, and they still do not approve of birth control in any form. I also believe that the Mormons are against it. So, we still see many Christians from those and other denominations using the pill, IUD, etc.-- in the eyes of some, this would be just as wrong as the abortion.

Some people, regardless of religion, believe that the world is too overpopulated to start with. Some see all the bad in the world, and don't want to bring children into what is bound to only become worse. Of course, abstinence would be a good solution, but how many people could maintain abstinence for any length of time...

I suspect that they are not making such a decision lightly. I don't know ANY woman who can just pop into a local clinic like it's Burger King and have an abortion. It's a hard thing but sometimes, for very personal reasons, they choose to have an abortion. I don't think trying to make them feel ashamed or sugguesting they aren't a 'real' Christian because they had one is right. It's not in keeping with the Christian message, IMO.
There are so many interconnected reasons abortion is chosen and until those other social issues (medical care, welfare reform, day care, employment insurance plans, etc) are addressed, I don't think anyone should be judging a woman's choice. It might not be the 'popular' opinion here but it's realistic.

Same way a right-wing Republican can flee to Canada to avoid the draft when it returns. Abortion is still a matter of free choice even among Christians. My Christian friends tell me that just because they believe in Jesus, they don't claim to know as much as He does, unlike some of my more zealous atheist friends.

If there are medical reasons that confirm that the mother, the baby, or both would die during childbirth, or the baby was the result of rape and the mother fears the rapist will come back and torment both mother and child or, it has been confirmed that the baby will be born with an incurable disease and/or defect, malformed, deformity, and would suffer in life with great pain then, yes the merciful resolution would be to abort. Jesus said that no child should suffer.

A person can be a Christian by believing that Christ is God. A person can have an abortion by terminating a pregnancy.

Christian's sin too. The thing they really shouldn't do is lie about it or try to justify it. That's when they get into hypocrisy.

It's okay to say, I made a bad decision, I sinned against God...but don't try to make okay, because it's not.

How can a person claim to be a Christian and judge others... Judge not lest ye be judged... Judging others (I believe) is a sin, and God's job. It says in the Bible, basically, that no sin is greater than another... So judging someone who has committed what we see as a sin, is just as bad as whatever they are doing... Think about it, then decide if it was a "Christian" question to ask.

it's all through the OT, as well as killing of unbelievers

God's OK On Abortion
"And when he hath made her drink the water, then it shall come to pass, that, if she be defiled, and have done trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall rot: and the woman shall be a curse among her people. And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed." (Numbers 5:27-28)

This nonsensical ritual, prescribed by God, to a woman suspected of infidelity, must undergo the drinking of a vile concoction made of bitter water and dust from the floor of a tabernacle. A priest calls a curse upon the woman's head to insure that if she has acted in adultery the drinking of the liquid will cause her to have a miscarriage. If she comes out clean, then she shall conceive.

Regardless of how ridiculous this procedure seems, any person who believes every word of the Bible must come to terms with the realization that the quoted God here sometimes authorizes abortion.
