spontaneous world wide floodings? massive locust plagues? seas splitting apart?

i would be alot more tempted to believe in god if some of this stuff from the bible happened recently. perhaps in my lifetime, if not in recent history, so that video cameras and maybe my own two eyes could varify.

why has nothing like that happened even remotely recently?

hurricane katrina?

because hurricanes are not blatant proof of gods existance like a human splitting apart the sea might. hurricanes have been thuroughly explained as a natural part of the weather.

See the thing is that back when they wrote that stuff they had no idea what caused natural disaster or how big the world is.

A local flood got written down as covering the world. A good year for locusts needed some supernatural explanation. Think of the way cicadas only come out in force every 13 - 17 years. Since they didn't know things like that, it MUST have been god.

We now know why things happen and don't need to ascribe everything to "God did it".

If we were still ignorant you can bet your life that tsunamis and hurricanes would be written up as some punishment form the gods.

This reminds me of that line from that one song in "Jesus Christ Superstar" that says something like "Why did you come at such a strange time and to such a strange land'....'First century Judea had no mass communications." Yeah, why didn't God send Christ at a time when modern telkevision, recording, and satelite technology would have made his message much more obvious to everyone, if that message is so important to save peoplke's fragile souls? Not to mention all the OT global flooding, and Exodus plagues; and the sea parting? Talk about great telkevision! Yeah God, what was up with that, thanks to your planning skills, untold milklkions are going to die/go to hell because they simplky can't belkieve any of this went on? What do we have now? Faith? pthhhhhhhh. Fat lot of good that usually does! If for some miraculkous reason I get to heaven, you certainly have a lkot of explaining to do big guy!

Well, think about this for a minute. The flooding, bug plagues, splitting seas happened within a world as known to the people who wrote the various parts of the bible. You see the mythical stories were stories of events that had happened, but you have to understand the fact that it was only peculiar to the area of focus. The bible was poorly written (although, some of its points are good on a philosophical and social level)...it was more of a record of SOME disastrous events...not of all that happened back at that time. There have been crazy things that have happened...just take the last few years for example. Hurricane Katrina; the fires in the South, the Surname that wiped out a large span of coast in India...should I go on?

No, you don't get it. You apparently were NOT in the middle of that huricane...otherwise, you might well understand. Clueless otherwise...sorry I even attempted to explain.

Thank you, Quackers.

Because that was at a time when they could not rationaly explain things that were happening, and stories got blown out of proportion with time. These things still happen... locust swarms, floodings in areas, and low tides cause land to appear.

The stories collected in the Bible happened over THOUSANDS of years themselves. No doubt people in the same time frame as the later books found some things in the earlier books pretty far-fetched as well.

How do you know that Hurricaine Katrina wasn't a "biblical" event?

EDIT: I know hurricaines are a normal occurance, but for some reason THIS one got more media coverage than any other in American history. Why is that?

As you discribe it flamboyant stories, but remember everyone of us when our mothers give birth and we breath our first breath it is a breath of hope and faith that someone will take care of us,The story of Noah is a story of Hope that even when almost everybody will become crazy and obnoxious,etc..if we open our hearts and have faith maybe biblical stories will not bother us,are we not bless?we have modern calamities scary enough, to question the faith of the bible writers and believers,is something we have to think about.

Do you think today's disasters aren't enough?

If someone wrote a Bible today.. don't you think they would have hundreds of obnoxious stories to tell?????

So, the more you hear about disasters the more you're supposed to believe in God??? There's plenty of those today..
