Above answers are generally correct, but not entirely.

MISS is used by single women or women who were once married and are now divorced. "Miss Jane Smith." Some women like to use Miss as they want a husband and it lets people know they are available.

MRS. means "mistress of." Since it is a possessive title, you have to use the husband's name with it. "Mrs. John Smith" is correct, "Mrs. Jane Smith" is not because you can not be your own mistress. Some people like using Mrs because it lets people know they are married so leave them alone.

MS. was invented as a neutral term not based upon marital status. You can use it if you are single or married. "Ms. Jane Smith" is correct in all situations, at all times. It does not let anyone know your marital status and gives no clue if you are looking or not. It is more popular with women libbers and gays than the run of the mill woman.

Or you can just join the military and use your rank.

Mr. means you are a MALE

Miss means you are a single female......unless you are in the south and then lots of people call ALL married females my their first name and put a MISS in front of it, like Miss Jenny.

Ms is used for either Male or Females, married or not to hide their sex and whether or now they are married. Pops
