I think "colonizadoras" originally referred to Spain, but I am working my way thru this paper and I think he is about to start writing about the United Fruit company in the Yucatan. So -how should I translate "compañías colonizadoras"?

a translation of a document is not a word by word thing.
is a interpretation of the document and a translation of it.
if you are asking how to translate those two words... yes that is appropriate. IF THAT FIT THE ACTUAL DOCUMENT.... WELLLLLL that is a different story.
Maybe you are trying to say the original company was ... or the primera compania was.... I CAN'T TELL YOU.... I do not know what are you translating.
