More specifically, what religion did they cling to before? Do they convert many evangelicals? How 'bout Muslims?

JW's love to make their religion sound like it is full of all these really smart people. For example; lawyers, Doctors, Engineers, Rocket Scientist, Politicians, Brain Surgeons, etc., etc. What is so funny about that is the way this cult discourages its members to further their education past high school and it is the newest converted members who have the education. 90 percent of original members, or born in the cult members, become toilet cleaners so they can focus all their efforts on their door to door ministry. A few times cleaning toilets and going door to door will send most rocket scientist running. So they get special privileges where they are allowed to use their brains because the JW's need those smart people so they can clam that those kind of people are in fact in their religion.
I am sorry for sounding so mean but all one needs to do is go to a non-supported JW web site to see for yourself that what I am implying is in fact the truth. Oh by the way, they keep their newly converted lawyers and allow them to practice law so they can sue those that shine a little truth into the religion. Or sue those that clam they were molested by a senior male member. Please see: silentlambs.com, to confirm that accusation. That's right, they will sue before they try to fix the pedophile problem in that religion.

Converts come from all backgrounds, former beliefs and nations. Some were former politicians, former officials and priests within religious denominations, and former atheists. They are converts from all religions including mainstream religions as Christendom, Judaism, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu. They are scientists, engineers, doctors, lawyers, laborers, and homeworkers, etc....many vocations from all lands.
