Many times, the husbands were very young as well PLUS people were considered 'adults' at that age since no one lived very long. You went from being a baby, a small adult then a big adult. They did not have the same ideas about childhood and the teenage years as we do. Life was too short so children were treated like adults.
You are right about it being hypocritical but people were very different then.

Because in those days women/girls didn't have a say in the household affairs which included marriage they were treated as a bargaining chip, to enrich their lands and selves, prevent fueds and keep from loosing their property. Today the women have a say and I think its better and healthier if all females have a say in who their partners are. I believe that older men don't have a right to have sex with any minor even teens if their are more then 3 years older then she is. In my state it is against the law to have sex with a minor if your more than 3 years older than she and I agree.

Who said Mary gave birth at thirteen. It doesn't say that in any bible I've read. Yes she would have been young but we should not just assume her age. It was not only in bible times that people married young. I remember when Jerry Lee Lewis first visited London and created quite a stir with his 12 year old wife. At that time, they had been married a year.

Social mores change as societies change. People now have on average longer life spans and marry later and that is now the social norm when it wasn't in that time period.
You cannot use today's standards to judge history - it is what it is and judging as thus will not change it.

Different time, different place, different standards. They had a much lower life expectancy and many, many women died in childbirth. Men married again. For several thousand years men had as many wives as he could support. Many countries still have plural marriage and many very young girls are married, including in our own. (U.S.A.)
