My brother likes to drive frequently with is hands @ the 6 o'clock position. This bothers me when riding with him b/c it looks as though if he would need to make a sudden evasive manuever it would take him time to reposition his hands to do so. Time that could possibly be needed to avoid an accident. So has anyone heard anything about it being dangerous to drive with your hands at certain positions on the wheel?

This is very dangerous. Your hands should be held on opposite sides of the steering wheel so you have the ability to take evasive maneuvers in an emergency situation.

The hands do not need to be at 9 and 3, or 10 and 2, be they do need to be in opposition, that is on opposite sides of the wheel for emergencies.

As a driver education instructor, I would not allow him to pass a class driving in that manner. As a road tester, I would fail him on a road test for lack of control.

Because of the way muscles work , it's just a bad position to do an evasive maneuver from. If he wants to drive one- handed suggest that he adopt the big-city position of right hand at the 11, 12,or 1 O' Clock positions which are ideal for snapping in and out of traffic with.

You're absolutely right. He has nowhere near the control he would have with his hands at 10 and 2, and if he has to make a sudden evasive move, there will be NO time to reposition. You don't mention his age but if he's young, he doesn't have the built-in reflexes that come with years of driving experience, which means it will take him even longer to respond. I'd refuse to ride with him if he continues to do this.

The correct positions are at 10 and 2 because that is the best place to be to have full control if something happens: car stops on front of you, slippery road, unexpected curve, animal or child running into traffic. I wouldn't say it is dangerous but it is not the safest for the exact reason you state. You are right.

In driving school the teach you to put your hands at 6 in the event of a roll over. On the street this is less of a concern. Maybe tell him that if the airbag goes off he will hit himself in the twig and berries.

Well I do it all the time, so I don't see any thing wrong with it. By the way, now they are teaching you to drive with your hands at 4'o clock and 8'o clock.

10&2 is the safest way to drive for the very reason you mentioned. People get lazy. I would say 6 is less risky on 2 lane highways on Sunday afternoons but that is about it.

I feel like it's pretty dangerous, but I'm completely guilty of doing that myself. I do it all the time. ^^;;
