ok the reason why I ask is when I was in high school, I knew this guy who was real devout christian and stuff and one time he remarked to me that the first time he would kiss his girl would be at the alter. Is it me, or is that a bit extreme? lol.

Not for some people. I would understand the desire to remain pure until marriage. I remained pure until I met my fiance. We've had sex and kiss a lot (he's so yummy), but he's also the person I plan on marrying, so I figure we're okay ^_^

Kissing is alright.
Romans 16:16, 1Corinthians 16:20, 2Corinthians 13:12 and 1Thessalonians 5:26 all say to greet one another with a holy kiss.

It depends on who you kiss. Normally, I would say no although if the person has a cold sore, herpes, hollow fangs or nothing but gums, I would be very careful. I think the guy was merely following his churches teaching and that it had nothing to do with you personally.

I really don't think any girl will tolerate that cr*p. He's not going to make it to the alter. Besides, most people who make virginity pledges don't keep them. I highly doubt he would do that, unless no one wanted to kiss him.

To me it's extreme, but some people don't believe in that kind of physical contact before marriage. To each their own.

it`s not really accepted to true christian doctrine. It`s very dangerous. The truth is it`s better to wait until marriage.

He sounds a bit extreme, but it might have been hyperbole, or even sarcasm.
