If I don't believe in God, it's not like YOU are going to change my mind. Seems like the religious among us spend a lot of time telling other people how to believe; why not just leave the sinners (everyone who doesn't conform to their exact beliefs) to burn in hell for all eternity? Seems simpler and less of a pain in the bum for us poor nonbelievers who just want to do our shopping without having to be harassed by a fat woman with 4 kids, a cane, and a Bible. Thanks.

Hmm...I have a hard time believing these people care about me and/or my salvation. Why devote this "standing-in-front-of-Safeway-time" to something that can actually make a difference? The thing that really pisses me off is that these people presume to know me and assume that since I don't go to church I am uneducated about religion (which I'm not), am a heartless person (again, not), and that I don't spend time doing very important religious things (such as protesting Harry Potter).

Dearest Earl D.,
Although I have already chosen another best answer, yours intrigued me, not because I buy what you're saying, but because I think you honestly believe it. Yes you have a right to say what you want, but I have a right not to listen, which is what I'm choosing to do, ergo I have the upper hand. Furthermore, in my opinion, your logic is completely irrelevant to the subject of religion. Not giving women or blacks or whomever the opportunity to vote is depriving a significant population of a common right. My choice to be atheist is my right. There's a difference between not having a right (ie: the right to vote) and exercising a right (ie: the freedom of religion). The two do not correlate at all. In fact, most of your arguments are nonsensical and I assume that your technique of capitalization was intended more for shock value than for actual substance. May I suggest that we not confuse the absence of liberty as a support mechanism for modern day missionaries. Cheers!

They think that you're passively atheist, but you're not, (I'm assuming) because they think you're just undecided. As an atheist, religious callers think you're just "fair game." That's untrue because the common misconception is that atheists don't care about religious beliefs when in fact they just don't belive in religion, in the same way that religious people don't belive in atheism. Next time tell them I already have a belief, it's called atheism, and it's just as valid as your religion. And besides, noone ever saw those jehovah's witnesses again. Even though I am religious I enjoy the looks on their faces.

Theres two reasons:

1. Some people feel that they have found something great and they genuinely want to share that with people. Just like if you ate a new candy bar and now your telling all your friends how good it is and that they should try it.

2. People feel that they are right and everyone else is wrong and they want to convert others to prove they are right and everyone else is wrong. These people are usually very close minded because god forbid they are wrong. They usually try to scare you or guilt you into believing what they believe.

Either way if your firm with your beliefs you shouldn't care so much about people trying to convert you.

I'm religious, but I'm not baptized. I think that people could be trying to convert non-believers because:

1. Their religion dictates that they convert non-believers.

2. They believe that non-believers need help because they stopped believing in God.

3. They can't bear to see anyone who doesn't see the same point of view as the.

It's because we know what it was like not believing and wanting people to leave us alone but somehow God in His power and mercy revealed HImself to us and we can now see the wonders of His hand and we want to share that with others who can't yet see it. Personally, I cry out to God daily for those who don't know HIm because I know that if they die without knowing God they will spend all eternity in Hell and it doesn't matter if they don't believe it now, in the end truth is truth. It's just sad that people reject salvation. God also tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves and when someone is sharing the gospel with you they are loving you and wanting you to come to Christ so you won't suffer for all eternity.

well a) they either care about you
b) it highers their self esteem.

I have converted people with out shoving wordes down their throat at all. in fact i dont convert, its really their choice based on their influences, the christian thing to do is to spread the good word, jesus never walked the streets and brutaly murdered a non believer, they changed upon their own will. this is something that our messiah sought to recongnised the choices we make are our own and must be held accountable for them not god and we are in no place to judge.

Very few actually care about you, but even at that they are still doing what we are told to do. We are told to spread the good news but, if a person doesn't want to accept it that's up to them because apparently they were not gioven the gift of repentance from God. If we do not spread the good news and someone dies with sin and noone explained that they would go to Hell then the person who did not explain this when they had the chance could go to Hell with this person because they are partly responsible for this person going to Hell because their cowardice kept that person from learning what they needed to know to stop going to Hell.

I totally respect your decision, its YOUR life, your soul.
Its just hard for most people to look around this beautiful place and not believe that some amazing force created it.
I think people just want to share that feeling with others.
For some, they look at the world and see the bad, and think its just here by chance. sounds to me like youve been burned.
god loves you anyways :)
You have a great sence of humor by the way. LOL

Well I'm agnostic but the way I see it, they do it because they care about you. They are sure they are right as you are sure you are and don't want others to have to suffer in hell. What else do they gain from converting you? It's not like they get money or anything. I don't know that's just my opinion.

I'm agnostic and I totally agree with imaqtpai! In their mind, they are helping you. I think they feel guilty if they sit by and let a poor soul lead a life in sin so they try to do their best.
