The other priest might have been disabled and had to stay on the altar. I don't remeber having two priests giving the Holy Eucharist together on the altar step, it's usually and priest and a deacon (or a Eucharistic minister, in this case.)

Extraordinary distributers of Holy Communion are to do so only when there are not enough priests. The 2nd priest should have been distributing before the layperson did.
In my parish the priest gave out communion to the First Communicants and only after they received did the extrordinary ministers help the priest with the rest of the congregation.

Well it depends on the Priest who is your pastor and what he decides to do. Last year our Pastoral Priest of over 20 years performed his last 1st communion as pastor of our church and he gave the Eucharist to 50 children in our church and they had a photographer to take pictures of each child and their family behind them watching. it was wonderful. this year our new Pastoral Priest did 1st Communion behind the altar with only the children up there with him and our resident seminarian. The Priest gave the Eucharist and the seminarian gave the Blood. No one was allowed to approach the altar or get close which made it difficult for parents to take pictures. We have never used eucharistic ministers for 1st Communion but they do come up after the children receive to help give it to the rest of the parish. I am sorry that your grand child's 1st communion wasn't a great experience but don't let it take away from the celebration of the family in the sacrament because it is the sacrament itself that is the blessing.

Yes, I agree.
The priest should administer a child's first communion. They always do at our church.
I'm sure it's not against church teaching or anything...it just would have made it more special.

This is an example of the problem in the Roman Catholic Church. People get all upset about ceremonies that don't really matter.
If they had a real relationship with Jesus they would realize that all those church ceremonies don't matter.
They have ritual but no relationship.
We don't need ritual, but we do need a relationship with Jesus.
And the kind of relationship we need with Jesus we get directly from Jesus, we don't get it from a church.

Jesus was still present in the Eucharist. Please don't let the minister used overshadow this joy.
