I saw this term in a yahoo answer and the person completely lost me from this point on.

It means that they have a weakened immune system. They are much more susceptible to infections than people who have a healthy immune system.

A compromised (weakened) immune system can result from a lot of things. It can be from chemo-therapy, AIDS, an organ transplant, bone marrow transplant, or a serious illness.

It means the immune system isn't working the way it should. AIDS patients are immunocompromised, as are people with other immune system disorders, and those undergoing certain medical treatments. It makes them vulnerable to infection by organisms that people with normal immune systems would fight off easily, like some molds, bacteria, and even algae.
