Afternoon, everybody, I just wanted to ask this question because I am going to learn to sing classical South Asian music from a coach very soon. I don't normally sing in front of people, because put plainly, I can't do it well. People say I sound like a boy most of the time. Is there any way I can sound more soft and "sugary"?

I'm 12 years old, by the way.

Also, is it true that it's best to sing on a (near) empty stomach?

There is no need to sound soft an sugary. Your voice is your own and I believe you will do much better if you take it where it is poised to go. Usha Uthup (formerly known as Usha Iyer), has a rich, contralto voice that can be mistaken for male. It didn't stop her from becoming one of the foremost singers in India. In a land where movie playbacks dictate success, for her to eschew that route, sing in English and still be phenomenally successful says something.

Never be afraid to sing your heart out, whether in the bathroom or in front of people. You were given a voice. Release it. Let it soar.

"Also, is it true that it's best to sing on a (near) empty stomach?"

It prevents burping, that's all it does, and even that can be controlled after a while. I've sung in public after quaffing pints of beer, not a burp in sight.

Go for it. I look forward to hearing your wildly successful record soon.

Some simple suggestions for lightening your tone would be to raise your eyebrows, think vertically. Before you begin singing, do some sighs (ahhhhhhh) starting up high and going all the way down. This will get you thinking "light". You'd be surprised at how much your tone is affected by the way you think!

As far as singing on an empty stomach. It's better than singing with a full stomach. You should always have SOMETHING in your stomach when you are going to sing or especially if you are going to perform. (In case you get nervous). However, the lungs need room to expand and they can't do so if your stomach is full of food! A pack of crackers and some water should do just fine. Then, after you sing, pig out!

Yes, its better to sing on an empty stomach. Because if you sing with food in your stomach, you could get sick. I have some advice for you to sing. When you sing, stand up straight and your shoulders straight. When you are singing the song, make sure that your mouth and jaw is moving up and down, and not side to side. Make sure that when you sing, you are pushing from your diaphragm. And when you go to breath in, fill up most of your tummy with air. And when you breath in, do not, I repeat, do not move your shoulders. ONLY YOUR STOMACH!! I can't stress that enough. Also, for you to learn to breath properly, lay on the ground [when practicing] and put your hand on your stomach and breath in and out and get used to that feeling of your stomach moving when you breath. And as for you general voice... your voice isn't fully developed yet. I'm sure that when your 14 or 15 your full general voice will be developed. I hope this helps!! And good luck with your singing!

Here are a few tips that can help ( I have vocal training and am about to graduate to teach choir):

1.) Be confident in yourself. When you sing watch yourself in a mirror to see if you are opening your mouth (tall, not wide) and drop your jaw.
2.) Don't try to imitate popular adult singers- when you are young your voice is still developing and if you try to imitate some styles you may hurt your voice. You say you don't sing well- but you probably sound like someone your age should :)
3.) It would be good for you to work on breathing techniques, breathing deeply from the stomach (try sitting on a chair with your upper body bent towards your legs and take in a deep breath like you are inhaling through a straw and put your hand on your ribcage- if you breath properly you should feel your ribcage expand. ) This gives you a little bit of what breathing deeply is like- if you work with a coach they can help you.

- Hope that helps you out! Keep on singing!
