They wanted Utah to become a State.
Its also interesting that a Mormon was interviewed by Alan Colmes of Fox News last week and this question proves that Mr. Scott Gordon, the Mormon was lying thru his teeth mis-representing Mormon teaching.
Here is the link so you can all hear it.
***INTERVIEW WITH FOX NEWS AND RADIO'S ALAN COLMES! Wednesday night I was interviewed for an hour on the Alan Colmes radio program. It was initially supposed to be just myself, but at the last moment, they brought in one of the leading defenders of the Mormon cult. The audio link for the program

Feel free to write Alan Colmes and tell him how Mr. Gordon lied.

I'm surprised the uber-mormons haven't cut & pasted the 13 Articles of Faith, as if that proves and settles anything.
So, in the interest of brevity, here's four versions or the Twelfth one, cut and pasted, of course:
12. We believe in being subject to kings, queens, admirals, judges, federal agencies, revenue officials, and in obeying, honoring and sustaining civil, maritime, de facto laws. In fact, we believe in following all national and international governments, because God will not hold us responsible for doing wrong if someone else tells us to do it.
12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law, unless the law of the land violates the law of God as dictated by the President of the Church, such as in prohibiting the marrying of more than one woman.
12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, magistrates, and male priesthood leaders and in obeying, honoring and sustaining whatever they tell us to.
12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law. Well, not all the laws. At least, not the laws against polygamy, unless they threaten to send troops. But now we obey that one, too. And if you can break a law to help get people baptized, that is probably okay, but don't get caught.

The government had, for all intents and purposes, shut down teh church altogether. It's hard for a church to do anything if they are no longer a church. Besides which, we do believe in honoring and sustaining the law, even if we don't agree with it.

They gave in and "officially" banned polygamy in order to gain statehood for Utah. There are many Mormons that still practice it today, some are just more secretive about it.
