I think all cars should travel at 50mph - that is fast enough - why are we in such a hurry all the time - slow down and just leave home earlier!

Not with the amount of traffic on motorways today. The speed of a road is calculated in relation to a cars stopping distance. At 70mph. There is enough accidents at 30 mph without upping the 70mph limit.

No, I don't think 70mph is too slow. The braking distance at that speed is the equivalent of 24 car lengths. At 70mph it takes to 8 car lengths to even think of braking (we humans have slower reactions than we think we do!). Increase the speed limit and you will see even more fatalities on the motorways of the UK.

It probably is a tad slow these days with modern cars. However it seems worse driving home from the airport if you've been on a long haul flight because you've been travelling at over 500mph for several hours and 70mph is going to seem slow.

Yes it is, slow as hell. I would prefer it to be like the autobahn, no limit, but if they do want to limit the speed it makes no sense to allow a Reliant Robin to go the same speed as a 7 series BMW. More expensive cars are safer and cost much more in road tax so cars should be rated for speed according to their technology.

Of course many people would oppose this simply out of jealousy of people driving more expensive cars.

70 is nothing in a car these days! motorways should be between 70 and 90. I feel there would be more accidents if all traffic stuck to the speed limit??

I'm absolutely 100% in agreement with John & Shona on this. The only country I can think of that has a higher speed limit is Germany and the autobahns were designed to accomadate tanks but even their sometimes unlimited speed limit seems a little excessive. You can't drive safely anything that your brain won't allow.

According to Government statistics, motorways are the safest roads to drive on. They also have the highest average speed.

75% of ALL road accidents occur at less than 30mph (again, that figure is from the U.K. government).

This is the truth in the real world, not the world of 'all speed is dangerous' paranoia...

Yes I agree, I have thought for ages that it should be increased to 80. I know for a fact that at 80 my car is more fuel efficient. So why is it still 70. In Germany on the autobahn there is NO LIMIT.
Lets all march on No 10 and lobby for an increase. Will I meet you there?

It's more about driving skill, road conditions, traffic density etc than arbitary speed limts. Overall I think 70 is slow for modern cars, but with Britain's congested roads sometimes 70 seems an unattainable dream.

The speed limit is correct,if you go any faster there is less chance of recovering from a mistake, many times it is some innocent person who suffers because of the fool speeding, remember, the most dangerous part of a car is the nut behind the wheel, STICK TO THE POSTED SPEED!
