It's nice to visit, and I have relatives whom live there and some who've lived there with good jobs and moved home.
The opera, Central Park, and all the entertainment and restaurants are nice. You can get some good deals on hotels and stay awhile.
The few weeks I visited my relatives in Queens, I was frightened and miserable, and wanted to go home. You have to walk one street, and not another. Some neighbors are alright, some are too much to talk about. After awhile, my brother-in-law noticed how upset I was at his brothers home, and arranged for me and his two daughters to stay in Brooklyn Heights. I liked it much better. The buildings were newer, there were a few trees in pots on the wide sidewalks, although they were chained. It was much more peaceful.
The neighbors were friendlier, and I read, in the evening. I didn't consider entertainment, as I was then happy enough and waited to go home without further comment.
I have visited Long Island also, and it is nice. It is like a suburb. Some places you like better than others, although all of it is reasonably nice.
If you do go to NYC, make sure you get into a neighborhood you can live in peace.

If you are a young professional NYC could be heaven on earth. It's exciting. The pulse is electric. Yet you're going to need money, plenty of money, to really enjoy NYC.

It is cool, but can get old. It is just like it looks in the movies.... gloomy and the sun doesnt shine. Great diversity and nightlife! People are out on the streets at all hours! Very aggressive and loud people.... They literally come out of restaurants in little italy and get you inside!
