Two weeks notice is a standard. However, seeing as it is perfectly legal to be fired and told to leave, without severance pay, you can also up and quit without notice.
A main reason for two weeks notice is that you want your old employer to give you a reasonable reference. Also, your new employer will consider your leaving the old firm without notice as somewhat farty.

I agree with some of the other responses already. You have the right to give no notice at all (unless per a contract of some sort). But, (1) good luck ever gettin rehired (don't laugh, people go back to companies they've quit all the time), and (2) don't ever look for a reference there. It is just considred bad form.
The letter of resignation normally goes something like this:
Dear Sir or Ma'am:
Today I am submitting this letter as notice of my resignation from Company A. I have enjoyed working here; however, for reasons blah blah, I have decided that I must move on at this time. My last day will be on June X, 2007.
Keep it simple (3 sentences) and keep it positive.
Best of luck.

you should really give at least one pay period of notice at a minimum .
so if your paid once a month then one month.
less then 2 weeks is not acceptable and is not seen as being enough notice or considered proper notice.
as for writing a letter that is fine you can its a good idea and make a copy of the letter being sure to date the letter
