Are they just sunless tanners with a dark bottle and a little coconut oil? What's their active ingredient?

Tan enhancers have no regulatory standards. There is no government agency regulating what they are or are not. Basically there is no definition of what it takes to "enhance".

So it can be anything. Oil in a bottle. Lotion b/c dry skin exfoliates quicker. A bit of sunless tanning itself. It can be absolutely anything.

Usually it contains aloe and vitamin E.

It also might not work at all. Unlike a sunless tanner which has obvious effects--there is no way to tell if something made your tan last longer.
