Why band when you can microchip?

I think that they should be banned.

I think that the breeding of this breed be left to competent breeders & take it away from back yard breeders.

Where I live you see scared dogs from fighting. Or you see some little guy being pulled down the road with a Pit Bull on a long logging chain. To me this shows stupidity & ignorance.

I have had lots of experience with this breed & I do not trust them. As a dog trainer in aggression work the Pit Bull falls short of doing his job. As a dog rescuer I have tried to save them from their owners.

The Pit Bull dog used to be a good dog. Remember Buster Brown Shoes & the adds for them? There was a Pit Bull Terrier in all the ads. That was only 40 or 50 years ago & due to back yard breeders & the Mexican influence the poor Pit Bull is what he is today. A dangerous killing machine.

Take this breed away from this atmosfer & you don't have the problems. The behavior of this breed needs to be modified & that can only be done by taking away the way they are bred.

I think that if more people were aware of what is happening in these back yards there will be a ban. The breeding should be left to the professionals & taken away from the fighting enviroment.

There will be people tell you that if you treat it right it will be a good dog. Well, I don't agree. In the breeding the mother is agitated several times a day to keep her adrenaline flowing & the pups are subject to this & of course they will be born with an attitude. Even if you treat this dog good it will stll have aggression issues due to the constant agitation of the mother while pregnant. So the ignorance of this fact is what is causing the high number of them with aggression issues.

They need to start getting tough on owners that are irresponsible, not the dogs. Many pit bull are good little dogs. I have a real nice pit bull mix that wouldn't hurt anything.

bluebonnetgranny has some good points.

She also has some bad ones.

I agree that backyard breeding is quickly destroying the quality of the breed.

However, I believe this to be true for ALL breeds. Backyard breeding has already destroyed the German Shepard, Golden Retreiver, and Lab, and has just about done it with pitbulls too.

That needs to be stopped. I'm not sure how to get it under control, but it needs to be done.

Also, a lot of the complaints about pitbulls in her post are OWNER issues, not pitbulls.

I do NOT believe that we should ever consider banning an entire breed of animal.

I do believe that we need to tighten up the dog ownership laws, penalties and requirements.

Not just for pitbulls, but for ALL dog ownership.

People need to be held accountable for their actions. People need to be responsible for their pets. People need to be held liable for problems their pets cause.

If we eliminated bad owners, and we forced people to become educated on what is necessary to properly raise, house and train a dog, 90% of our problems will instantly go away.

Pit bulls have a really bad rep. I own one and she is the sweetest dog. No they shouldn't be banned. The bad owners should be.

Ban them??? I don't think they should be, but limiting them might not be a bad idea. People who own them because they love the breed and want a good life for them is one thing. But thugs on the street that buy pits to increase their testosterone and drug dealers that get them because they think the dog can tear up someone better than a Rott. Is another thing. I don't think that pits deserve to be over bred and over populated because they are "dangerous" Well no breed deserves to be owned because of his image rather than the love some one could give it.

I don't like pits, had a nasty incident involving an attack on a family member, I will NEVER own one- BUT- no breed should be 'banned'. Ban pits, then other breeds will follow. There should be harsher penalties for having a vicious animal, pit or not, that force people to be responsible for their pets. I also have no problem with some breeds needing to be muzzled in public.

I should add- I own a shepherd, and would have no issue if a muzzle law was passed that she had to be muzzled in public. While we adore her, I realize LOTS of people are bitten by shepherds every year, just like pits.

Some towns/states/and even countries want to ban pitts because of their naturally aggressive behavior.

I don't agree with banning a dog based on its genetics. It's true that pitts are born with aggression - whether it comes out in their disposition or not. But, if you're going to ban one aggressive breed, you have to ban them all.

Rotties, huskies, german shepherds, dalmations, akitas, etc. etc. The list could go on and ON!

It should be a case-by-case basis.

I support education over genocide.
Owners need to know how to train pitt bulls and how to properly socialize them to all types of people, races, ages, and ethnic backgrounds as well as different environments and stimuli.

No!, pit bulls are nice, but protective, i think it really depends on how the owner treats it as to how it acts
