First, not all mixed race people say that.
My kids say they are amerasian, filipican, or ameripino, depending on what kind of mood they are in.
And we areall the same race anyway. The human race.

There is no reason not to;you can not unmix the genetic makeup. To choose only one race is to deny one parent;but racism still exists today and there are so many ignorant, fearful people who refuse to learn.I am not easily identifiable by race;when people ask they get the whole list.I identify myself as a human being and by my achievements and I do not tolerate rude, racist behavior.

Why not say the truth, that they are Black.
It only takes a drop of Black blood to make a person Black.

Some White Mothers who have babies by Black Men
then don't accept their children's Blackness.
They will say the child/ children are White regardless
of their skin color, or the fact that the Father Is Black.

In my State the School System list the Race of the
Child by the Race of the Father.

The Mixed Race does have a name, It's Mulatto.

ha ha ha! I'm 25% Croatian, 25% Austrian, 25% Gaspésienne (aka Quebecoise), 12.5% Cherokee Native AND 12.5% Haitian...and still, i'm not really sure what nationality i really associate myself with.(Although, i do love being so multi-racial)

My younger brothers both see themselves as Haitian even though it's the lease dominant in our blood. I guess it all depends on the person's upbringing and how comfortable they are with themselves and their heritage. Ppl sometimes need to have a sense of belonging...and if they are more comfortable saying that they are Caucasian than saying they're African American...well that's their choice.

Speaking from experience here...it's actually kind of difficult to feel like you belong when you're so mixed...so, if you can associate yourself with one culture more than another...why not! Maybe the person who sees themselves as caucasian, was picked on all their life for being of mixed background...and they just don't like that part of them. You don't know what happened to someone or why they say what they say. It's not for you to judge....and frankly, who gives a ****.

My aunt is Croatian and Austrian...and yet she goes around telling ppl she's Native America (even though none flows through her blood) It makes her happy...she associates herself with their culture. You're gonna tell her it's wrong? My father has no oriental descent...yet, he's a black belt second dan in Shotokan...are you gonna tell him that he should be wearing buffalo hide, dancing around a bonfire while eating poutine and speaking Haitian Creole? C'mon...

Well, i'm done rambling...Peace.

Because people need to place other people in neat little boxes.
According to Thomas Jefferson, a white person with an eighth of black blood or less is white, any more than an eighth, the person is black.

I don't know, honestly. It probably has to do with a few obnoxious, ignorant people who like to call mixed-race people names like "Oreo" and people want to protect themselves from that. Racism still exists today, unfortunately.

Um, just FYI, "mulatto" is an offensive term. Has been for quite some time. It's like saying "colored" or "Negro" or the "N" word.

Agreed.

And if they are looking for support, information
and / or social-interaction -- listed below are
some great groups they can join to help
celebrate their Mixed-Race heritage.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Generation-Mixed
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MGM-Mixed
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FGM-Mixed

Also -- it should be noted that a person does not
have parents who are listed in two (2) separate
"racial" categories in order to be Mixed-Race --
as, many Mixed-Race people are from families
which are of a continually Mixed-Race lineage.

In addition -- often -- when people are of both
an 'Black / African' and 'White / European'
lineage (and / or parentage) -- many people
in our society want to falsely label them
as being mono-racially 'Black' people.

To falsely refer to them as being mono-racial
'Black' people or to falsley categorize them
as being 'Black' is to adhere to the racist
concept called 'The One Drop Rule'.

The 'One Drop Rule' is the false and racist
teaching that 'Black' blood lineage is to be
seen as "tainted" and that 'White' blood is
to be seen as "pure" -- thus, even 'one'
mere 'drop' of "tainted" 'Black' blood
would magically make a person become
a "cursed" mono-racial 'Black' person.

Again -- the 'One-Drop Rule' is a sickening
and racist concept that was created to make
people falsely believe that their 'Black' blood
was "tainted" & their 'White' blood was "pure".

No amount of 'Black' blood is "tainted" --
and -- if someone is truly proud of their
'Black' blood lineage then they should
be ashamed ever promoting the racist
'One Drop Rule' and the false concept
that Black blood could ever be 'tainted'.

My advice to anyone who is of any part-'Black '
lineage is --- "be proud of your 'Black' blood
-- and display your pride by openly and also
publicly rejecting the racist 'One Drop Rule'!!

By the way -- the 'One Drop Rule' was finally
ruled as being both 'Illegal' and also as also
being 'Unconstitutional', in the United States,
in 1967 with the 'Loving vs. Virginia' court case.
