Mangos are quite popular and common, not strange. Plantains are just a type of banana, not unusual at all. Now guanabana is one I haven't heard of before, either. But a quick search shows that it's from the custard apple family.

Mango Guava and Plantains are strange in your area?
They have been staples here forever!

Have some fun, and try them. Most people are piss-poor with their veggie and fruit intake, so hopefully having more selection will encourage people.

Some of the new stuff may be because so much of the CA crops (especially citrus) were destroyed this last winter. There may not be enough oranges and cherries, etc, so the stores are expanding what they stock.

Why is it strange? I love Mangos, Guava and Plantains. Hmm, probably strange because you never grew up with these kinds of fruits. I was raised in Hawaii and used to pick these right from the source....the best! =)

New immigrants have always brought their tastes with them - otherwise we'd all be eating buffalo jerky and corncakes.

The latest influx has a lot of people from areas where plantains are a staple. Supermarkets are trying to keep up.

And, as lots of others have said, Americans are looking for more "exotic" fruits and veggies these days.

Plantains are wonderful - slice them up and fry them in some coconut oil.

And when the supermarket starts carrying loquats and pawpaws, get back to me.

More and more "exotic" fruits (vegetables, too) have been appearing, and remaining, in US grocery stores. It's been kind of gradual, but each year the selection seems to get a little wider.

I think it's mainly due to two things: Americans are more and more curious to try new foods. For example, star fruits have become extremely popular in the area where I live. As recently as one year ago, they were hard to find; now, there's a whole section of the Produce Department devoted to them. People heard about it, tried it, and realized they liked it. The demand for it caused the grocers to carry it.

Also, shipping and storage methods (for fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, and everything else) have improved greatly, and are continuing to improve. A couple of years ago, you couldn't find sashimi-grade (raw) fish in markets, unless the market was in a coastal town. Now, I can get it any time I want it, in the middle of Pennsylvania.

Ya the stores have had to get inventive due to the shortage of California fruit thanks to the weather issues. We see those fruits up here in Canada alot in the Winter time as they are no more expensive then importing the usual apples and oranges from the states

No stranger than oranges showing up in grocery stores in the northeast, or bananas in American grocery stores. We eat all kinds of foods not native to our areas. Tea and coffee don't grow in America, for example.

Yes I have noticed it and I think it is great! Variety is the spice of life and stores seem to be trying to make life spicy for the American public. Be adventuresome try something you don't know. It certainly isn't poisonous

It's not terribly recent, unless you live in the rural midwest. I love the selection. I can cook a lot better here in CA than I could in the midwest!

I agree with What the... and to add to it, Americans are also becoming more health conscious. Thanks to cooks like Rachel Ray (love her or hate her), at least some of us are starting to veer away from grab and go fatty foods and cooking quick and healthful meals ourselves. Consumers are beginning to realize that gourmet chefs are not the only cooks who can use special ingredients.
