generally airports have a quiet time from midnight for a few hours, and the flight times would mean that the plane wouldn't turn round and get away in time. Ideally they want to get an aircraft away from uk just before the quiet time, and get it back as soon as possible after. Short ~2 hour flights make this sort of scheduling easier.

It's all to do with flight slots and the cost charged by airports. That's why most low cost airlines use smaller airports outside main areas. The cost is lower for the airline and therefore the price paid by individuals is then cheaper.
