I had a dream that I was running after someone across a ditch, it was very muddy and sticky when I suddenly fell into a deep water filled hole....I thought, this is it, I'm going to drown, and I woke up! Any thoughts on what this could mean? I often have dreams where I die, past dreams have included myself being shot in the head.

when ur dying in a dream it means that ur about to have a big change soon. and this is a good positive change not bad. also that ur stopping ur old habbits and going on to something new.
but if u have been having a bad relationship or something u might be trying to get this obligation out of ur head.

Sounds to me like you feel you are competing with someone in life and that you don't feel you have the strength or ability to keep up. The ditch probably represents a specific barrier that you believe is in your way and the drowning is just fear that you are way out of your depth.
Take a good look, you are probably far more capable of dealing with this 'thing' than you think. It may be that the only ditch is your own lack of self belief. Challange your lmiting beliefs and go for it.
Being stuck might suggest you don't know quite how to tackle a problem... try breaking it down into bite size chunks. How to eat an elephant? One bite at a time!!

This is you running with the wind with everybody as you do . Our conscious says we go to work as others are going to. When you go shopping you automatically have the natural intuition that others will be there and then there is your own spiritual path about your own particular choices and this dream is telling you to slow down and take caution do just go where all the others are going like some drifter.
The fact you dream being shot in the head is your confidence reaching your outer limits the edge and meeting what exists in your subconscious as the edge and that could be being shot in the head or winning the lottery. What did it feel like ? Not as bad as you think?

This is what you dream means. It means that you are pursuing after someone "blindly". And by following after them you fell into harms way. The water hole represents the judgement of God. Since you did not take heed to the warnings given to you, you have brought this own yourself. It sounds like a warning from the Lord. Check your life and may sure your not pursuing after someone foolishly.

Usually the dream interpreters base their interpretations on the exact opposite of what normal peeps like you and me would imagine our dream images(symbols) to represent. The best explanation of dreams I have heard is, - it is the brain doing it's daily housekeeping chores nothing more nothing less!
